What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

For twenty years, the goal of search was to rank on page one. Now AI systems answer questions directly, often without sending anyone to a website at all. Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is the work of becoming the source those answers trust and cite.

Search quietly changed

For two decades, being found online meant one thing: ranking high in a list of blue links. You optimised a page, earned some links, and waited for the search engine to send visitors. That world still exists, but a second one has grown beside it. Increasingly, people ask an AI a question and read the answer it writes, an answer assembled from sources they never click. If your business is not among those sources, you are invisible in that conversation.

What GEO actually is

Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of making your content the kind that AI systems trust, use and cite when they answer a question. Where classic search engine optimization aims to win a ranking, GEO aims to win a citation: to be the source the model reaches for when it builds its reply. The audience is partly machine now, and the machine has different habits from a human scanning a results page.

SEO and GEO are not the same

It helps to be precise about the difference. SEO is about a page appearing in a list, where a human then chooses to click. GEO is about a passage being selected, summarised and attributed inside an answer the human never had to click for. Good SEO still helps, clean structure and authority matter to both, but optimising only for rankings and ignoring how AI systems read and reuse content leaves the newer channel on the table.

How AI answers choose their sources

A language model writing an answer favours content that is clear, well structured, and easy to extract a precise claim from. Pages that answer a specific question directly, in plain language, with the key point stated rather than buried, are far easier to quote than pages that meander. If a human has to dig for your point, a model will skip past it to a source that made the point obvious.

Trust is the currency

AI systems, like search engines before them, lean toward sources that signal credibility. This is the idea behind experience, expertise, authority and trust, often shortened to E-E-A-T. Show that real people with real knowledge stand behind the content. Be specific rather than generic. Get the facts right and make it easy to see why you can be believed. In a world where anyone can generate plausible text, demonstrable trustworthiness is what makes a source worth citing.

Structure content to be cited

Practically, this means writing in a way that is easy to lift. Lead with the answer, then explain. Use clear headings that match the questions people actually ask. Keep key claims in clean, self-contained sentences. Add structured data where it fits, so machines can read your content as well as people can. None of this is trickery; it is simply making the expertise you already have easy for an answer engine to find and quote correctly.

Do not abandon what already works

GEO is an addition, not a replacement. Traditional search still drives real traffic, and the fundamentals, useful content, a fast and crawlable site, real authority, serve both channels at once. The mistake would be to chase the new thing while letting the basics rot. Build GEO on top of solid SEO, and you are positioned for how people find information now and how they will find it next.

Where to start

Pick one important question your customers actually ask, and write the clearest, most direct, most trustworthy answer to it on the web. State the answer up front, back it with real expertise, and structure it so a machine can quote it cleanly. Do that repeatedly across the questions that matter in your field, and you become the source the answers are built from.

Common questions

What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

GEO is the practice of structuring and presenting your content so that AI systems, the ones that answer questions directly, treat it as a trustworthy source and cite or recommend it.

Is GEO the same as SEO?

No, but it builds on it. SEO aims to rank a page in a list of links. GEO aims to be the source an AI uses when it writes the answer itself. Good SEO foundations help, but the goal is different.

Does GEO replace SEO?

Not yet, and probably not entirely. Traditional search still sends most of the traffic. The smart approach is to keep solid SEO while adding GEO, rather than abandoning one for the other.

How do I start with GEO?

Answer real questions clearly and directly, structure content so it is easy to extract, demonstrate first-hand experience and expertise, and make your trustworthiness obvious. Clear, citable, credible content is the foundation.
